one to
one.

One hour with someone who has run a design studio for nineteen years, and is still working parts of it out.

Where this comes from

People started asking. So I started saying yes.

They come from designers running a studio of their own, at a point on the road full of doubts: how to sell, how to talk about the work, whether they have a style, whether it matters if they don’t, how to lead a team without a manual, how to have the conversations nobody teaches you to have.

I have a coach myself, and she is not a designer. That is useful in some ways and limited in others, because I still have to explain my world before we can work on it. This is the other thing: an hour with someone who has been inside your world for nineteen years and has already made most of the expensive mistakes.

There is a process behind it. I use what my own coach taught me, and I run it through my own experience, as a designer and as the person who has to keep the business running.

What we talk about
  • Pricing, and what to do the moment a client says it is too much.
  • Selling, and how to talk about your work without becoming someone else.
  • Whether you have a style, and whether it matters if you don’t.
  • Saying no, and what it costs you when you don’t.
  • Hiring your first people, and becoming the person they work for.
  • Leading, and the soft skills nobody teaches a designer.
  • Which work goes in the portfolio, and which work you quietly leave out.
  • Visibility, talks, awards, social, what actually brings work in.
  • The business underneath the studio, margins, dry months, growth you didn’t ask for.
  • What to do when you have lost interest in your own studio.
