Washingtonian is the ‘go to’ magazine for Washington DC. It represents the city and the stories that come out of it; and it also serves the city and the whole USA in providing information about the nation’s capital. The magazine has a rich history with the city and just celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The client was looking for some specialized typeface for their front cover. They were redesigning the front and back covers of the Washingtonian so they needed a display type to start each section. At the beginning they asked for the headlines typeface for ‘Capitol Comment’ and ‘Where & When’ but in the end we also developed the words for all the sections.
We came up with a condensed serif display typeface with a classic structure but which was also stylish and had modern details. Lengthened characters and contrasted strokes bring to mind the columns of the Capitol. At the same time, the characters’ counters evoke the Washington Monument.
