During Autumn 2017 UNIQLO launched a new store in Barcelona. UNIQLO is a clothing apparel company, which was founded in Japan. With over 1000 stores around the world, they opened their first store in Spain.

 

When UNIQLO open new stores in new countries they usually create shopping bags designed with the local culture in mind. For the opening of the new Barcelona store, we were asked to create three shopping bag designs and a mural for the stores interior.

 

Although they are a global brand they really wanted to spread the message that they respect and understand the city as it really is; not wanting to change things but instead choosing to integrate. That is why we came up with the idea that was titled Homes: the true identity of a city.

 

A good part of Barcelonas citizens live in flats with beautiful antique floor tiles. This creative, durable and colourful flooring dates from the 19th century and remains incredibly popular today. As home is where people can be themselves and act freely, Barcelonians would visually connect this true and honest identity with their homes, with the hydraulic tiles being a big part of them. We created three bag designs that evoke classic antique floors.

 

For the interior passage of the store, we translated activities and things the people of Barcelona do in their free time and translated them into graphic icons. The Mediterranian Sea lapping the east of the city and the 300 or so days of sunshine per year define the lifestyle of Barcelonians. The mural shows the lifestyle that people enjoy here: riding a moped or a bike, skateboarding, sunbathing on the beach, having a coffee or vermut with bravas on the terrace of a café, going for a walk in the city centre or enjoying live music.
